You can do very complex shapes just using the Marquee tool and the lasso tool. Draw for an example a circle. Hold down the shift key and draw a rectangle. You have now combined two different shapes by adding a rectangle to a circle |

If you want to do the oposite way, hold down the Alt-key while you draw the rectangle. |

Draw the shape using the Marquee tool as shown above. |

Deselect the shape and apply the Gaussian Blur filter with radius 4,5 (or higher for softer shape) |

Go to Image/adjust/levels and drag the 3 little arrows to the middle of the curve. |

This may seem a little bit more complicated, but you have more control
of the shape this way.

Start with a new RGB image with the grid on and snap to grid draw a circle and fill it with black. |

Add a new layer and draw a rectangle. Fill it with black. Flatten the image. |

Mark the shape with the magic wand tool, copy it (Ctrl+C) and paste it (Ctrl+V). Go to Layer/transform/ and flip horizontal. Move the copy so it will fit with the first layer. Flatten the image.
